Issues in Russia

In light of the recent bombings on the Moscow metro it might be useful to examine the Chechen issue in Russia.

Why would Chechen women kill themselves in Russia? What is their cause?

Provide a brief report on the Beslan school hostage situation in Russia in 2004 that involved Chechin rebels.

Immigration Assignment

To date in class most of our focus on migration has been on immigration to the United States. Do research on any Western European country that receives a large body of immigrants. Where do most of the immigrants come from? Why have they left their homelands? (remember our discuss of push/pull factors) Attempt to explain 5 challenges that they might have in trying to assimilate into their new country.

Cry Freedom Assignment

This assignment will require you to report on the life of Donald Woods. Describe Wood's job as editor-in-chief at the Daily Dispatch newspaper in East London. Under the guidance of Woods what was the paper's stance on aparthied? Describe Wood's relationship with Steven Biko. Describe why Woods became "banned" by the South African government. How did Woods and his family escape from South Africa? What did Woods do to further the fight against aparthied while living in England? What did he do when he came to the United States?

Describe how your surroundings are different in China from what you experience in San Diego.
