Issues in Russia

In light of the recent bombings on the Moscow metro it might be useful to examine the Chechen issue in Russia.

Why would Chechen women kill themselves in Russia? What is their cause?

Provide a brief report on the Beslan school hostage situation in Russia in 2004 that involved Chechin rebels.

Please post your brief responses by Wednesday March 31.

For a very long time, the Chechnyan people's history and relationship with Russia, has not been very friendly. Chechnya people have been trying to break free from Russia's control and become an independent nation. Chechnya people have very limited rights and do not have a voice in their government. The main reason that Russia does not want Chenchnya to be an independent country is because they have a lot of oil. Russia would not have a main source of oil if Chenchnya separated from Russia.
The Beslan school hostage crises was for three days, and 300 people died as a result. This lasted from September 3-4 in 2004. The people that were held responsible for this hostage crises captured 1,100 iniscent people(including children). Ultimately, at least 334 hostages were killed, including 186 children, and many were injured(were missing). The Chechnya rebels did not have a good relationship with some of the people at the school. At the time, Russian troops were withdrawn from Chechnya, and Russia did not allow Chechnya to be a independent country. One of the main reasons that Chechnya people decided capture hostages in the Beslan school, was because of their animosity towards the Russian government.

The Chechens and the Russians do not have a very good or friendly relationship. In fact, their relationship is full of turmoil. For many years now, the Chechens have been trying to secede from Russia and become an independent country. Russia does not want this to happen, for if it did, Russia would lose Chechnya’s important oil deposits. Also, Russian security services have been helping lead the crackdown on Islamic extremism in Chechnya. Tension between the Russian government and the Chechen president have escalated into warfare a few times. Chechens do not have many rights, or a voice in the Russian government. Therefore they wish to break free, but Russia will not let them, for fear that letting Chechnya secede will encourage other regions to do so as well.
On September first of 2004, Chechen rebels and terrorists took hostage over 1000 innocent people, many of them children, in School Number One in the Russian town of Beslan in North Ossetia. It lasted for 3 days, and resulted in 300 deaths. The Chechen rebels demanded an end to the Second Chechen War. They felt a strong animosity towards the Russian government, who would not let Chechnya break free from Russia. On the second day of the hostage situation, two grenades were fired by the hostage-takers, apparently to attempt to keep the Russian security forces away from the building. For the first two days, the Russian government made attempts at a peaceful negotiation. However, on the third day of the hostage situation, Russian security forces stormed the building. The school was shaken with explosions, followed by pandemonium breaking out during a gun battle and fierce fire. Ultimately, at least 334 people were killed. 186 of them were children. Hundreds more were injured or were reported missing.

The history between the world-wide power house and it's subdivided area within it has never been good. Russia and Chechenya have been fighting for ages. Chechyna is a particularly valuable spot to Russia with it's lare oil and mineral deposits along with the major production of mining tools.
But why are they fighting? Chechynian people feel that they have a right to break free of Russia's grasp and be their own independent nation.
The recent train bombings at Russia's subway system have recently been big news. Suicide bombing- Big News. A issue that has been going on for ages- BIGGER News. Women suicide bombing?- BIGGEST NEWS.
Though we may think we have it hard when we don't get the newest shoes or phone and everyone else does, we have it the easiest in the entire world. As shown, people are willing to die for their cause, which, in this case, is to let their small region be its own country.
The Beslan School Hostage Crisis is probably the worst part of the attempts to break free from Russia. It was when a group of Chechen armed terrorists stormed School Number One in Russia, and took 1,100 people hostage. On the thrid day of the hostage taking, Russian forces stormed the building as a chaotic battle took place, it was estimated that nearly 400 dide, and many more were injured or missing.

Here are some reasons why the Chechen women might have blown themselves up in the subway in Russia.

Chechens have been trying to become a separate, independent nation outside of Russia. Russia does not want them to separate, for Chechnya is a major source of oil for Russia. Also, terrorism can lead to political changes. The Chechen women might have blown themselves up in the subway to make a statement. People often become terrified of the terrorists, and the terrorists’ groups or ideas gain more power. Suicide bombings are meant to destroy a large area, and the suicide bomber intends to kill themselves, along with others. The fact that suicide bombers kill themselves in the process shows that they truly believe in their cause. If those people are willing to give up their lives, they are basically giving up everything they have except their ideas. When they do commit suicide, it makes a stronger point and the government is more likely to hear about it and do something. This helps the terrorists, for they get what they want, and some people would die for what they believe in. An example of terrorism affecting a country is that the Chechens were in a war against other parts of Russia. Eventually, the war stopped. Then, there was a bombing campaign, and the war started again. This shows that terrorism can change peoples’ minds. Also, Chechen women have blown themselves up in the past. These Chechen women were part of the Black Widows. This group has tried to get revenge for being widowed, which is another possible cause for the attack.

Summary of the Beslan School Hostage.

The Beslan School Hostage was a hostage held by the Chechen people on September 1, 2004. They captured one thousand people in a school for three days in School Number One. About three hundred thirty civilians died. It is said to be the worst terrorist attack that Russia has ever had. The hostage started thirty minutes after the school started the year. Thirty four terrorists stormed into the building. Fifty civilians escaped during this time. Eight people died during the storming. Ten people were killed immediately after. The terrorists holding the hostage threatened to kill the hostages if authorities did not do what they said. Many things happened during that day. The next day, the terrorists fired two grenades towards the security offices just outside the school. The next day, a truck comes to clear out dead bodies, but sets of explosions that kills some people and injures others. Thirty people escaped alive. Russian forces moved in and confirmed that they killed twenty seven of the terrorists. The first of the funerals took place on Sunday September 5, 2004. The next day, there was a mass burial of one hundred twenty victims. In November, 2005, Abu Omar al-Saif, who was the suspected head of Beslan school hostage, commits suicide. Then, on May 26, 2006, Nur-Pashi Kulayev, who was the last known terrorist, was sentenced to life in prison. This was a huge crisis for Russia, and the Chechens definitely made a statement.

The Chechens have been trying, but failing, to become an independent nation and not a part of Russia. They were treated very bad during World War II, they were all shipped away to security facilities because the Russians believed they were planning with the Germans. The Dictator at the time had said this. Chechnya is a very rich oil area which is why Russia mainly wants to keep it, for it's profit and money. It is also a main source of oil for Russia and Russia is not going to let that go away.

The Beslan school hostage crisis was a three day hostage-taking of over 1000 people which ended in the deaths of over 300. It happened after Chechen terrorists took more than 1,100 people hostage on September 1, 2004. This group was sent by the Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, who ordered the end of the second Chechen war. On the third day of the face off, Russian forces stormed the building using tanks, thermo baric rockets and other heavy weapons. There was a series of explosions that hit the school followed by a fire that engulfed it and a gun battle between the Russians and Chechens. In the end, 334 hostages were killed followed and 186 children. This tragedy set off a bunch of political arguments about security and policies it believed that more than half the people who died during the siege were shot down by the Russian militia and that some crazy men had yelled attack and some of the militia, thinking it was there commander, fired.

Chechan rebels do not like the take over of their home province by Russia. The Russian troops entered Chechenya on October first 1999 and came out with a victory in May 2000. After the gain for Russia, Chechenya started to rebel. This caused Russia to place tight security on the streets which made the tensions larger. In April 2009, the so called “Counter Terrorism Operation” was officially ended. Apparently, that was not the case.Chechans rebel because they are unhappy with the government situation in Chechenya. The Chechans want independance from Russia at any cost. They do not like the way the government is treating them and use suicidal bombings to gain attention of the country and world. These violent acts are the only way to let people know their cause.

The Breslan school hostage lasted three days and was when Chechan terrorists took one thousand people hostage. One third of them were killed and hundreds were injured. The event included gun battles between the Russian security forces and the Chechan terrorists. On the first day of school, because it was a special day, there were more people at the school than usual. Rebels arrived at a school in Breslan with weapons and some had explosive belts. They forced everyone into a building by shooting at them. Then they took the captives into the gym and grasped any phones. The attackers singled out who they thought would be their biggest threats and took them to the corridor next to the cafeteria where a bomb was set off. In the end, all people in the cafeteria were killed except for one who had lost consciousness. On the second day, the negotiations between Roshal and the rebels were unsuccessful, so the hostages would not be allowed food or water or other necessities. The Russian government reported that there were 354 hostages and so the rebels mistreated the hostages even more. The heat caused the hostages to take acts of desperation. Later that day, two grenades were fired by the rebels and the Russians did not return fire. On the third day of the hostage, government officials tried to break the captives free, but nothing worked. After the agreement was made that the paramedics would take away all of the dead bodies, the paramedics came. Then, they heard it. There was a bomb that went off taking 120 people's lives. The devestation did not end. After several theories of what happened, it was confirmed that the two bombs that went off were intentional. The Russian troops then began to control most of the school. It was too late. Hundreds of people had already died.

The relationship between Chechnya and Russia is not a very good one.Chechnya wants to break away from Russia, but Russia will not allow it. There has been quite a few wars and massive destructions before. Chechen women would want to kill themselves in Russia because they would want to cause the most destruction possible in their enemies country. These two women set off the bomb during rush hour- when the most amount of people were on the subway- so more people would die of the bomb. They wanted to show Russia that they would break apart and become independent. The bomb acted kind of like a warning, they wanted to very clearly get there point across that they were heavily supporting the country of Chechnya's cause of becoming independent from Russia.

The Beslan school hostage situation in Russia in 2004 that involved Chechen rebels was a three day hostage-taking of over 1000 people which ended in the deaths of over 300 children and teahers that were at the Beslan School. It began when a group of armed mostly Chechen terrorists took more than 1,100 people (including 777 children) hostage on September 1, 2004, in the North Caucasus region of the Russian Federation. The hostage taking was carried out by a group sent to issue demands of an end to the Second Chechen War. On the third day of the standoff, Russian security forces stormed the building, using tanks, thermobaric rockets, and other heavy weapons. Explosions shook the school, followed by a fire which engulfed the building. At least 334 hostages were killed, including 186 children; hundreds more were injured and many were reported missing. This tragedy led to security and political repercussions in Russia.

In the late 18th century (1785) Russia began trying to conquer Chechnya, and finally succeeded by 1859. Chechens always took the opportunity to revolt whenever they thought they could get away with it. The Chechen desire for independence from Russia is only partly due to the fact that they are Muslims; the Chechen people have always resisted foreign rule even before they converted to Islam. Most women who commit suicide are usually part of the group called the “Black Widows.” People in general usually commit suicide to make a statement. If Chechens complain about their life to the government they wouldn’t really care about it, but if you commit suicide the government would likely hear about it and try to fix things. These are some reasons on why Chechen people would want to commit suicide
The Beslan School Hostage occurred on September 1st, 2004. Chechen people held it. The Beslan School Hostage was a three days. The Massacre involved about 1000 people. On the third day of the hostage Russian security forces stormed the building, using tanks, thermobaric rockets, other heavy weapons. Immediately over 300 hundred deaths, 186 of those deaths were children. Hundreds more were injured and many were reported missing. Funerals occurred on Sunday September 5, 2004.

Why would women kill themselves for this issue? What was there cause? Many officials say that the attack was intended as a message to the security services. Also, the Cechen people have, and have had in the past, a tense relationship with the people of Russia. This is partially because Russia used to have control of the Chechnya country and Chechnyan people have had to fight back to become an independent country. (Russia does not like this because Chechnya has a great source of oil for Russia.) Yet another inferred reason that caused the will of the attack was that the bombers were terrorists, and wanted to make the most devastation possible.

The information about the Beslan school hostage crisis: The Beslan school hostage crisis was a hostage of a school that lasted three days long, took over 1000 people, and killed about 300 people. The hostage was done by a group sent out by a warlord Shamil Basayev, and the main purpose was a demand to end the second Chechyen war. Also, it was a sign of anger towards the Russian government. The group that attacked consisted mostly of Ingush and Chechen terrorists. At the time, Russian troops were not in Chechnya. This was a big devestation, and there were many weapons used in the hostage crisis such as Thomobaric weapons, guns, and knives.

Russians control Chechen because of how much oil it has. Russians have taken Chechen under total control for the economic advantages. The extremest in Chechen are terrorizing the country in order to gain rights, freedom, and dignity.

Chechen terrorists took more than 1,100 people hostage in a russian school. Their demands were to stop the second Chechen War. The Russians did not meet the demands and attacked the school with full force setting it on fire. 334 hostages were killed

Chechnya and Russia have never had a good relationship. Chechnya is trying to become its own country because the people don’t like having overpowering rulers. Russia doesn’t want them to become their own country because Chechnya has important oil deposits, as well as natural gas, limestone, gypsum, sulphur, and other minerals. Its mineral waters have made it a spa center. Major production includes oil, petrochemicals, oil-field equipment, foods, wines, and fruits. If Chechnya becomes its own country, then Russia will have to pay to get oil and all of the other goods that Chechnya has. They are willing to blow themselves up to gain independence. They target major industries like the subway or other major businesses. If they destroy or slow down these businesses, the Russian government will slow down for a week or two, trying to clean up the mess. This will hurt Russia’s economy because they will be spending more money than they will be gaining. I think they should let Chechnya be their own country.

As the article states, the reason why the Chechen women bombed the train was to send a message to the security there and how the people of Moscow are being mistreated. In Russia, the Chechen people are badly mistreated, so some might kill themselves just to end the suffering. This issue is similar to many others, like in Africa. Many smaller nations were/are trying to break free, or escape the grasps of the corrupted government.

The Belsan School Crisis (AKA Belsan School Massacre) is very much like this recent incident. It occurred in 2004, when over one thousand people were taken hostage in SNO (School Number One) over a three day period. Over seven hundred were children. Those three days later, over three hundred of all of the people were killed. How does this relate to the bombing? One part: the security of Russia got involved. The Security brought tanks, rocket launchers, and other things of the sort. When they got to the school, the school was shot down into flames. Many died during the incident, and even more were injured/killed later.
